Barely half a century ago, the epitome of travel in the Šumava was the puffing steam engine, getting out of breath on the frequent and lengthy ascents of local railways, and sending sharp whistles of the released steam far and wide. This romanticism of steam was gradually lost with the onset of diesel engines, transforming the way people travelled.
However, visitors to the Vimperk region can now re-live those idyllic railway times. For further information see the Czech Railways information leaflet or view the website www.cd.cz, or phone 840 112 113.
