Skiing

Šumava in winter is a different world from that in summer. The soft waves of the hills are covered in white and the countryside sinks into silence disturbed only by the occasional swishing sounds of skis and the thumping of ski poles. It is here on the plateaus and moors around Kvilda that the country’s lowest temperatures are regularly taken. This seemingly inhospitable wintry world, however, is a true paradise for skiers, who come from far and wide to get exceptional experiences.

Cross-country fans in particular have a large number of interconnecting, well marked and superbly groomed tracks to choose from, either in the close vicinity of Vimperk, or further away at Churáňov, on the vast plateaus near Kvilda and Modrava, or further to the south, near Stožec and Nová Pec. In addition to kilometres of tracks leading through fascinating countryside, skiers can use a range of facilities, such as car parks, refreshments, restaurants, accommodation facilities, and also information centres providing maps and brochures concerning the tracks.

Downhill skiers are sure to enjoy the slopes and lifts at Churáňov and Zadov, Kubova Huť, Javorník, and at Nové Hutě, as well as smaller slopes at Kvilda, České Žleby, Strážný, and Popelná.
